Assessment of temperature – thermometer and its types
The thermometer is a device to measure or calculate the temperature of any place, thing or say human body in our case. Thermometer mainly has two important components in it, one is the temperature sensor by which it senses the temperature of an object and second is the converting unit of the thermometer by which we can convert the temperature into numerical values. For example, in the case of glass thermometer, the bulb of mercury is the temperature sensor and the visible scale that is available on the glass thermometer is the converting unit.
Thermometer are widely used in almost every industry whether it is a meteorology, medicine or scientific research. There are different types of thermometer available to be used and we will further discuss some of them according to our use.
Glass thermometer/ Clinical Thermometer
Glass thermometer is an oral thermometer. This has two main components in it. (1) the bulb of mercury (Hg) and (2) stem which is used to read the temperature we can call it reading scale. Mercury is a dense metal and silvery-white in color. It is a poisonous metal which means we should use glass thermometer with extra care. Mercury is the only metal which stay in liquid form at room temperature and its melting point is -38.83 degree Celsius.
Now let’s come to the reading section of glass thermometer. There are two type of lines on the reading scale – long line and small line. The long line is one degree Celsius and the small line represents 1/10th part of one degree Celsius. Lowest reading on a glass thermometer is 35 degrees Celsius or 95 degrees Fahrenheit and the highest reading is 43.3 degrees Celsius or say 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
Some of the important point to know about glass thermometer
- The rectal thermometer has a short bulb and red in color. Rest of the property is same as an oral thermometer.
- If thermometer fall onto the ground than mark a circle around it and collecting the mercury with the help of a dropper.
- Mercury circle should be cleaned by 1% Sodium Hypochlorite (NaClO) with mopping (ikspk).
- Blood spot of any normal patient should be cleaned by H2O2 (Hydrogen peroxide).
- Blood spot with HIV positive patient should be cleaned by 1% sodium hypochlorite.
- The thermometer should be washed by soap, water and disinfectants like Dettol, Savlon, Lysol or Fairenol.
This type of thermometer is used to measure the temperature of the liquid solution or lotions. The freezing point of this thermometer is 0 degree Celsius and boiling point is 100 degrees Celsius therefore, the reading range for lotion thermometer is 32 Fahrenheit or 0 degree Celsius to 212 degrees Fahrenheit or 100 degrees Celsius.
Tympanic Membrane thermometer
This device is used two measure the temperature of the tympanic membrane by detecting infrared radiation from tissues. This type of thermometer is very quick as they show result within 2 seconds of time and directly measure the body core temperature.
Electronic thermometer/personal thermometer
Electronic thermometer calculates the temperature electronically and shows us the reading in an electronic device attached to it. These type of thermometer can have different variety like contact digital thermometer or say non-contact digital thermometer. Non-contact type uses the infrared radiation technology to measure the temperature.
Disposable paper thermometer
In this, a strip of chemically treated paper is used to measure the temperature.
